Skip That Traffic; Fly Your Car Soon

America's Terrafugia Transition is planning to uncover its car-cum-plane vehicle called 'The Flying Car - Transition'

If you wish you could own one of the slick vehicles that turned into robots in the 2008 movie 'Transformers' - well, dream on. However, you could hope to hop into one of those cars that can fly!

In a couple of years, when you're stuck in traffic, you'll have the option to fly off in a two-seater vehicle to reach your destination. An American company called Terrafugia Transition is planning to uncover its car-cum-plane vehicle called 'The Flying Car - Transition.'

The car commenced its historic first flight on March 5 with 27 additional flights to be completed over the next several weeks.

That's right. The Flying Car will let you take a spin on the roads where it will be capable to fold up its wings after you've vroomed pass the stratosphere.

Apparently, 'The Flying Car' can travel up to 725 kilometres in the air at a speed of more than 115 kilometres per hour.

Do you have it in you to fly a car?

The Flying Car Transition requires a Sport Pilot certificate to fly. The two-seat aircraft is designed to take off and land at local airports and drive on any road.

Transforming from plane to car takes the pilot less than 30 seconds. The Transition will cruise up to 450 miles at over 115 mph, will drive at highway speeds on the road, and fits in a standard household garage.

The vehicle has front wheel drive on the road and a propeller for flight. Both modes are powered by unleaded automotive gasoline.

By giving pilots a convenient ground transportation option, the Transition reduces the cost, inconvenience, and weather sensitivity of personal aviation. It also increases safety by incorporating automotive crash structures and allowing pilots to drive under bad weather. Refundable airframe reservations are currently being accepted.

Fuelled by gasoline, it has front wheel drive on the road and a propeller for flight.

With its wings folded, it can be parked in your ordinary car garage.

Its initial cost is expected to be around $200,000 (nearly Rs.1 crore), says the company which has already orders for 60 vehicles.

The company says that work is underway on Stage 2 of The Flying Car, the Beta Prototype. First delivery is expected in 2011.
