Safety buzz hits Indian car market

The Indian car market is now manufacturing and producing cars with more safety measures. A growing number of cars, even the low end ones are being souped with global safety measures. It is great news, not just for the common man but even for the IT companies.

Safety features that earlier only came with high-end models are now being introduced in small cars. The recent introduction of factory fitted engine immobilisers in Maruti cars and anti-lock brakes in an entry-level car like the Chevrolet Spark are examples.

The electronic content in a car in western countries that are safety obsessed could be as high as 40 per cent and Indian Indian companies are trying to catch up to that level.

President of Automotive Sector M&M, Pawan Goenka, says that the Indian car companies will move up the value chain and though they may not be able to reach 40 per cent in two years time, they will definitely move from the level that they are in today.

Indian Software giants like WIPRO are doing what they can to help the Indian Automobile Industry. The company already has a team of 1,500 dedicated people working on safety systems like advance collision detection.

Senior Vice President Manufacturing Solutions, WIPRO, N S Bala, confirmed that the advanced collison detection systems are going to catch up in India from a safety standpoint very fast.

WIPRO and others like KPIT-Cummins are working hard to comply with Autosar, an open standards organisation created to provide a standard for vehicular software, user interfaces and management.

Says Vice President KPIT-Cummins, Anup Sable, "We are working closely with tier ones, Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) and semi conductor companies to get these components out, validated and tested so that they will be ready when the commercial application starts."

An estimated $300 million worth of automotive embedded software is sourced from India by various global OEMs. By serving them, the IT companies have already gathered world class capabilities and as cars in India climb up the value chain, IT companies they are well prepared to make your drive safer and more enjoyable.
